چکیده

years. In many parts of India, it lias long been the practice to utilize night-soil as manure without any previous treatment. It is also occasionally used for preparing ' poudrette' in combination with mud and refuse. In recent years, however, the desirability of preparing composts from night-soil and different forms of organic wastes under aerobic conditions is being increasingly realized as efficient means of both disposal and utilization of such materials. Fowler (1927) suggested that night-soil might be dumped on refuse heaps and the mixture turned frequently so as to facilitate aeration.

Pile settlement and volume reduction measurement during forced-aeration static composting.

In this study, a settlement measurement device was used to track the settlement of different layers in composting piles, and time courses of settlement velocity, bulk density distribution, and effective bulk density were investigated. Settlement is divided into two stages: the physical compressive settlement and the mass loss settlement. At the end of the former stage, bulk density (rho') and p...

Composting of Town Refuse by the 'Edelmist' Process

Conversion of organic wastes, including night-soil, into manures has been practised for a number of years. Among the methods so far developed, those of Hutchinson and Richards (1921), Waksman and co-workers (1927), Fowler (1930) and Howard and Wad (1931) are most extensively adopted. These methods involve fermentation under essentially aerobic conditions. They are fairly rapid, but they also in...

Use of Crude Oil and Bleaching Powder in Controlling Fly Breeding in Compost Trenches

number of "municipal 'towns, in India, the methods of disposal of town"-wastes like night soil and katchra are highly insanitary and wasteful. The katchra dumping grounds and the night soil trenching grounds have often proved to be dangerous sources of fly breeding. For some years now, the compost method has been recommended as a satisfactory system of disposal of town refuse. It has proved to ...

Seasonal greenhouse gas emissions (methane, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide) from engineered landfills: daily, intermediate, and final California cover soils.

Compared with natural ecosystems and managed agricultural systems, engineered landfills represent a highly managed soil system for which there has been no systematic quantification of emissions from coexisting daily, intermediate, and final cover materials. We quantified the seasonal variability of CH, CO, and NO emissions from fresh refuse (no cover) and daily, intermediate, and final cover ma...

Composting of Soils Contaminated by Explosives

oil at more than 30 munitions sites across the United States is contaminated with explosives. The U.S. military has discovered that the composting process, and the use of finished (mature, cured) compost can effectively remediate munitions-contaminated soils. To incorporate such soil into the composting process, the soil is excavated and mixed with other feedstocks. The end-product is a contami...
